How to Get to the Hermitage

The Main Museum Complex of the Hermitage is right in the centre of Saint Petersburg, on Palace Square and the Palace Embankment. The easiest ways to reach it are by metro or on foot.

Address

By metro

The nearest station is Admiralteyskaya (purple line), about 5–7 minutes’ walk to Palace Square. It is the deepest station in the Saint Petersburg metro; the exit brings you out near Malaya Morskaya Street, from where you walk toward the Neva and the General Staff arch.

A little farther are Nevsky Prospekt / Gostiny Dvor; from there it is about a 15-minute walk to the museum along Nevsky and Bolshaya Morskaya.

On foot and by surface transport

From Nevsky Prospekt it is a pleasant 15-minute walk: go along Bolshaya Morskaya Street and through the General Staff arch, and you come out straight onto Palace Square in front of the Winter Palace. Buses and trolleybuses also run through the centre (stops by Palace Square and on the embankment) — check current routes in a maps app on the day.

By car, taxi and water

Driving into the centre is awkward: there is a paid parking zone and restricted traffic around Palace Square, and there is no dedicated museum car park. By taxi it is easy to ask to be dropped at Palace Square or on the Palace Embankment. In summer river boats also serve the centre — not the fastest option, but a scenic way to see the city on the way.

On arrival: where the entrance is

The main visitor entrance is from Palace Square, through the gates in the railing into the Winter Palace courtyard. The ticket offices and ticket machines are there too. In high season there can be a queue at the entrance even with an e-ticket, so allow a little extra time.
